Las Hermanas Ice Cream Truck founders Julia and Nina Mewborne are doing much more than giving a portion of their profits from their new business to the Alzheimer’s Association Capital of Texas Chapter. The teenage sisters are making a statement about the importance of business plans including funds for such worthwhile causes (see story on page A5).

Anyone with a friend or loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease can associate to the frustration of feeling unable to help, but the Mewborne family realized that providing professional resources can make a significant difference. Liz and Nina Mewborne’s grandfather, Bruce, suffers from the disease, so they know they can look to the Alzheimer’s Association Capital of Texas Chapter for assistance. Services include everything from counseling through licensed social workers to helping meet practical needs.

Nina Mewborne points out in the article that the Westlake-based business’ customers have been “extremely supportive” of their efforts to help fund the local Alzheimer’s Association. She said that some of them relay their own family experiences with the disease, and that kind of support spurs the Mewborne family’s efforts.

A key to the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission will be to continue engaging many age groups in the fundraising efforts. The association funds not only growing needs but research aimed at finding a cure. If other businesses would set aside a portion of profits to helping this cause, that mission may not be impossible.

The story of the Las Hermanas Ice Cream Truck is a testament to the fact that small acts of kindness work wonders.
